About the LRC
The original Labour Representation Committee was formed in 1900 to fight for political representation
for the Labour Movement. In Britain today we face a similar crisis of representation. The LRC has been
re-formed to secure a voice for socialists within the Labour Party, the unions, and Parliament.
Never in the history of the Labour Party has the need been so great to make the case for peace and
socialism. The advocates of global capitalism and war have taken control of the political agenda. The
task for today's LRC, founded on 3rd July 2004, is to fight for power within the Labour Party and trade
unions and to appeal to the tens of thousands who have turned away from Labour in disillusion and
despair. Therefore we are calling upon all socialists, Labour Party and trade union members,
constituency Labour parties and union branches to join our campaign and join or affiliate to the LRC.
The LRC is an open democratic organisation committed to the development of a radical policy agenda for
the Labour Party and the trade unions. In particular we support:
- An economic policy based upon public ownership and the democratic control of key sections of the
economy, including an end to further privatisation and PFIs, direct investment in council housing and
the public services, the re-nationalisation of rail, support for public service broadcasting and the
development of an energy and environment policy based upon ecological sustainability and the needs of
communities
- A social policy based upon the redistribution of wealth and power, including the full restoration
of trade union rights and an increase in the minimum wage, a decent state pension and the restoration
of the link with earnings, the restoration of student grants, an end to top-up fees and to selection
in education, the restoration of effective local government, the defence of the rights of asylum
seekers, and the continuing fight against racism, sexism, homophobia and prejudice against those with
disabilities
- A foreign policy based upon peace, nuclear disarmament, human rights, an end to Labour's support
for the US Republican right, the withdrawal of British forces from Iraq, and the struggle against
corporate globalisation
- A Labour Party policy based upon the strengthening of the Labour Party/trade union link, and the
restoration of Labour Party democracy, the role of conference, local parties and activists in the
policy making process
