Industrial Campaigns

The main industrial campaigns for the LRC for the next few months will be:

“Public Services Not Private Profit” campaign

At a mass rally and lobby of Parliament held on Tuesday 27th June 2006, over 2000 trade unionists from across the UK converged on London to demand “Public Services Not Private Profit”.

The campaign was launched on 29th March 2006, and is sponsored by 16 public service trade unions - including ASLEF, BFAWU, CWU, FBU and RMT - and numerous campaigning organisations.

To support the campaign, John McDonnell MP, who chairs the PSNPP campaign, tabled an Early Day Motion (EDM) “calling upon the Government to introduce a moratorium on privatisation and to engage in a constructive dialogue over how Government, local communities and the trade unions can work together to provide the high quality public services this country needs”. To find out if your MP has signed EDM 1376 ‘Public Services Not Private Profit campaign’ check the House of Commons EDM database.

The Trade Union Freedom Bill is the policy of both the Labour Party and the TUC - passed at the 2005 conferences.

John McDonnell MP said, “This campaign is gaining an unstoppable momentum for legislation to restore trade union rights which I believe no Labour leader will be able to resist.”

RMT - Justice for London Underground cleaners

RMT Tube cleaners working for private contractors on the London Underground are engaged in a campaign of industrial action for a living wage of at least £7.20 an hour.

The RMT is also demanding: 28 days' holiday, sick pay, decent pensions and travel facilities, and an end to the practice of 'third-party sackings' in which cleaners can be dismissed, with no disciplinaryhearing or right of appeal - a device used to get rid of union activists.

CWU - Post Office in the Public Sector

CWU members are currently taking industrial action to defend the Post Office. The action aims to end post office closures, end unfair competition, against job cuts, and to guarantee a decent living wage.

For full information about the industrial action in October, see the CWU website.

At the Warwick Policy Forum, it was agreed that the Post Office would remain in the public sector. As part of their campaign, CWU has launched a consultation process on one of Britain's greatest national assets - the Post Office. The document ‘Delivering Quality: The Post Office in the Public Sector’, which is available on the CWU website, was successfully presented to a Westminster rally in March.

FBU - Keep Fire Control Local

Like RMT, CWU and ASLEF, the FBU is part of the Public Services Not Private Profit Campaign.

The FBU is also campaigning to force the Government to urgently re-think plans to close all 46 emergency fire controls in England and move to one control for each region.

Urge your MP to support EDM 1874 'Closure of Fire Control Rooms' tabled by David Drew MP.

ASLEF - Free travel for drivers

The union is campaigning to secure free travel facilities across the UK network for all ASLEF members - regardless of their employer.

Before the railways were privatised all employees were granted free rail travel. It is ASLEF's belief that these concessions should be made available to all employees and their nominated partners, including same sex partners, regardless of length of service - and that the facility should be retained into retirement.
