Construction lobby - fighting for trade union rights

Clear evidence emerged recently that several major construction companies had been blacklisting workers for trade union activity. Under the Employment Relations Act 1999, the government has the power to introduce regulations prohibiting the blacklisting of workers for their union membership or activities, and now finally, the Government has indicated that after a short consultation it will legislate in the autumn. [continue...]

The LRC has welcomed the occupation of the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS) in Bloomsbury, London. Students have occupied in a protest over the detention of nine cleaners arrested by immigration officers and deported. The cleaners were involved in a “living wage” campaign. [continue...]

London MPs call on Mayor to keep London Living Wage promise for tube cleaners

London Labour MPs will today hand in a letter to Mayor Boris Johnson at City Hall, calling on him to fund the London Living Wage for all London Underground cleaners. MPs will also be tabling an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons demanding “urgent remedial action from the Mayor as Chair of Transport for London to improve cleaners’ working conditions”. [continue...]

Labour MP calls for full public inquiry into Construction Industry

The OFT has today fined 103 construction companies for rigging bids for contracts. This follows the scandal of construction companies abusing its workforce through blacklisting practices, and increasing concerns about the practices of gangmasters in the industry and health and safety standards. [continue...]

GMB members working at British Gas have voted 82% in favour of strike action and industrial action short of a strike by 90% on a 61% turnout. [continue/comment...]
