Norfolk Coalition Against the Cuts: This time we will look the enemy in the eye On Wednesday (8th September) Norfolk Coalition Against Cuts (NCAC) was formed. The meeting jointly organised by UNISON and PCS pledged to unite and fight the planned attacks of the Tory-Lib government both locally and as part of a national struggle of resistance now underway throughout the country. Regional and branch officials plus members from the CWU, UNITE, UNISON, PCS, NUT and the FBU joined forces with local community groups and activists and members of the Green Party and Labour Party. The mood on the floor of the meeting was militant and determined. Speakers underlined the point that a fight is on its way and we have to prepare for it. Local Union rep from the CWU stated that for the last 5 years post office workers with support from workers and the public have repeatedly fought against plans to privatise Royal Mail: now only the might of the trade union movement can defeat the Tory-Lib plans for Royal Mail. This thought was echoed by fire workers entering the meeting in uniform who spoke to the floor explaining that they had come to show their solidarity and support:  the Tory controlled County Council were cutting the force and number of stations to cut costs putting the public and fire workers at greater risk. For these workers strike action is now the first order of the day but now it is linked to question of how to deepen the movement nationally.  The mood was summed up by a UNITE representative who said this time we will not be divided, this time we will look the enemy in the eye! [continue/comment...]

On Saturday NCAC organised a stall in the City Centre. Hastily convened a handful turned out on a bright sunny morning and were well rewarded for the effort.  People from all over the County lined up to sign our petition and join the fight.  In a 2 minute conversation 3 care workers agreed to join a union (Unison) in their workplace and help organise a meeting on their estate.  It is clear from what many said that at this stage the role for the anti-cuts movement is to simply get organised and spread the word.  A series of estate based meetings would be easy to organise.  In much the same way as the All Britain Anti Poll Tax Federation the anti-cuts movement could quickly organise working class resistance to the cuts through estate based anti-cuts unions linked to coordinated action of the unions.  The one acts as a support to the other and vice versa.  We need to give the unions the confidence to unite and fight these attacks while the unions need to know that they have the active support of society as a whole.  We need to learn the lessons from not only from the defeats the movement has suffered but also its successes.  The fight against the Thatcher’s Tories and the Poll Tax did not result in a defeat for Capitalism but it did show how to effectively organise a campaign into which the ideas of Socialism could be combined with an effective fight against a vicious reactionary right wing attack on the working class.  In Norwich the anti-cuts movement has received a warm welcome from the folk of Norfolk.  We ran out of material and everyone was buoyed up by the experience agreeing to make the Saturday Stall a regular slot in the diary.  [continue/comment...]
