John McDonnell expelled from Commons for Heathrow protest

15th January 2009

On 15th January, the Government approved the expansion of Heathrow airport and the building of a third runway. Local MP and LRC Chair, John McDonnell MP was suspended from Parliament as he protested the decision in the Commons, and Labour MPs Andrew Slaughter and Virendra Sharma have resigned as PPSs over the decision.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said:

“John McDonnell should be congratulated for the stand he made today, which was a stand for democracy and the right of MPs to represent effectively the people who elect them. If anyone is treating parliament with contempt it is those who would deny MPs their right to vote on crucial and controversial issues such as the future of our environment.”
