24 Labour Rebels in ID Cards Vote - Government's Majority cut to 25
On an issue which has not been seen as a high priority critical issue for the left, 24
Labour MPs voted against the ID cards Bill and reduced the Government's majority to its
smallest since the General Election, leaving Government whips reeling.
John McDonnell, Chair of the Campaign Group, said
“The Government needs to take this vote very seriously. The left mobilised
a large wide ranging rebellion on an issue which we never prioritised.
“It is a strong warning of trouble ahead over the Government's terrorism
measures, the ongoing privatisation of public services, and the whole ‘respect’
agenda.”
