McDonnell Calls for Donations Cap to Solve Donor Row
As Chair of the Labour Representation Committee and the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, John McDonnell MP wrote to the Prime Minister and the National Executive Committee urging an immediate cap of £1000 per annum on donations from individual donors.
John McDonnell MP said:
“I am today calling on the Prime Minister to propose an immediate cap on donations from individual donors to protect the Labour Party from any further damaging allegations.’
“Thousands of Labour party members across the country will be concerned at the standing of our Party following these recent suggestions of financial impropriety. There must be decisive action to end the party's dependence on individual wealthy donors in order to protect the Party from any future hint of illegality.
“Above all, our Party desperately needs to build its membership base and to re-mobilise its support right across the country. We cannot achieve this goal if the party is smeared with these sorts of damaging allegations.”
