John McDonnell's Alternative Queen's Speech

Labour leadership contender sets out radical alternative legislative programme

John McDonnell MP, challenger for the Labour leadership, has today set out a radically different legislative programme, illustrating how Britain might look under a McDonnell Labour Government.

It is a radical break from the tired New Labour programme of attacks on civil liberties, immigrants and the public sector, which focuses on redressing inequality with measures on decent pay, pensions and greater childcare provision.

John McDonnell, Chair of the Labour Representation Committee and Labour leadership candidate, said:

“It's time for change. This 'more of the same' Queen's speech will be seen as an irrelevance by most of the population. People are not only willing to accept a radical break with current policies and political practice, they are increasingly demanding it.

“People feel that the entire political establishment is ignoring their priorities on housing, education, crime, pensions and workplace rights - and by failing to take the steps people are demanding on the environment and foreign policy.

“Today I have set out a number of proposals which will form the basis of the alternative programme on which I will be fighting for the Labour leadership.”
