LRC backs McDonnell 4 Leader

John McDonnell MP selected as the LRC candidate for the leadership of the Labour Party

Largest gathering of Labour Left since Tony Benn's challenge for the Deputy Leadership of the Party in 1981 gives its unanimous endorsement of John McDonnell's leadership challenge

John McDonnell MP has now the complete backing of the Labour Representation Committee.

At the LRC's annual conference at the TUC in Congress House yesterday over 450 activists from constituency labour Parties, trade unions, and Labour movement campaigning organisations unanimously passed a motion from CWU Central London Branch calling on the LRC to support John McDonnell MP.

John McDonnell MP said:

“I was moved by the overwhelming support given to my candidature. It demonstrates the real enthusiasm in the Labour Party and Trade Unions for the debate about the policies needed.

“It shows people's real concerns that without a change of political direction, we run the risk of undermining the support of a Labour Government both now and at the next election.

“The support for the candidature was so strong and well beyond our expectations.
