May Day Demo to call for restoration of TU rights

Campaign for a Trade Union Freedom Bill - Key theme of May Day Demos

National May Day TUC Demonstration to call for repeal of anti-Trade union laws and restoration of workers rights

John McDonnell, Chair of the LRC, said:

“Across the board now the trade union movement is increasingly calling for a change of political direction. 9 years into our administration the movement expects a Labour Government that gives people rights at work, prevents the Gate Gourmet style of sackings, and halts the privatisation of public services and jobs.

“The campaign for a Trade Union Freedom Bill is a test for anyone who wants to lead the party in the post-Blair era and unions will be determining their position in any future leadership election on the basis of the candidates' support for the restoration of employment rights.

“There is tremendous breadth of support on the backbenches for a Trade Union Freedom Bill - 138 Labour MPs have now signed Early Day Motion 1170 which is well over half the number of Labour backbenchers who are permitted to show their support.

“The next step is for the TUC to work with supportive Labour MPs to finalise the drafting of the Bill, publish it and get on with promoting it in Parliament.”
