Labour MPs demand reform of Trade Union laws
New EDM tabled today creates stir in Commons
Over 50 Labour MPs signed an Early Day Motion (EDM) demanding major Government reform of Trade Union laws following the Gate Gourmet dispute
The TUC-backed Campaign for a 'Trade Union Freedom' Bill is mobilising widespread support across the breadth of the Party and the Labour movement
For an EDM to be tabled with so many MPs signed up in advance, including senior figures from all sides of the political spectrum within the PLP, is a clear signal to the Government of the strength of feeling on its own benches about the issue.
John McDonnell MP, Chair of the Socialist Campaign Group and the grassroots Labour Representation Committee, said:
“Stark lessons learnt in the Gate Gourmet dispute have prompted a campaign for trade union rights with wide-ranging support demonstrated across the PLP and the trade unions.
This campaign is gaining an unstoppable momentum for legislation to restore trade union rights which I believe no Labour leader will be able to resist.”
