Trade Union Rights for a Labour Third Term
7 pm, 28th February, Grand Committee room, House of Commons
Chair: John McDonnell MP, Speakers: Barry Camfield (TGWU), Bob Crow (RMT), Billy Hayes (CWU), John Hendy QC and Steve Cottingham
(United Campaign)
Trade Unions, lawyers and Labour MPs are calling for Labour Manifesto commitments on trade union rights. At a meeting in the
Grand Committee Room of the House of Commons on 28th February at 7pm trade union leaders and MPs will be demanding that a Labour
third term include major reforms to employment law.
Bob Crow, General Secretary of the RMT, and Chair of the United Campaign for the Repeal of the Anti Union Laws said:
“Our members are stopped from taking legitimate industrial action by laws from a bygone era. New Labour has kept the
Thatcher anti trade union laws and the time for change is long overdue.”
John McDonnell MP for Hayes and Harlington, and Chair of the Labour Representation Committee said:
“The current law is biased in
favour of employers. If Labour wants to win the votes of trade unionists in the next General Election the Manifesto must promise a
restoration of trade union rights.”
John Hendy QC said:
“UK employment law is out of step with European and international standards. A third term Labour Government
should give employees a legal right to strike and take solidarity action in line with International Labour Organisation conventions.”
Other speakers include Billy Hayes, General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union, and Steve Cottingham of the United Campaign
Legal Advisors Group. The meeting has been called by the United Campaign for the Repeal of the Anti Union Laws and the Labour
Representation Committee.
