Opportunity for Anti-War MPs

LRC anti-war declaration signatory MPs

The Labour Representation Committee is today writing to a group of Labour MPs to ask them to sign an anti-war declaration in advance of the General Election so that the public can easily differentiate them from those MPs who supported and continue to support the war in Iraq.

There is serious concern on the Labour benches that anti-war MPs may be swept away in the backlash against Blair and the war unless their electors are fully aware of how they voted on the war issue.

The Labour Representation Committee is therefore acting to give anti-war MPs a chance to distinguish themselves and ensure that their records and voting intentions on this issue are made fully public.

“I am delighted to make it abundantly clear that I have totally opposed the Government's war on Iraq and will do everything in my power as an elected representative to demand an end to the illegal occupation of a sovereign state.”

John McDonnell MP, Hayes and Harlington

“Some of us made a very principled stand to vote, constantly, against the war at a difficult time, we now hope and trust that our constituents will appreciate what we did on their behalf.”

Ann Cryer MP, Keighley

“For the first time on March 18th 2003, MPs actually made the decision whether or not to got to war, we need to ensure there will be no more wars at the behest of US foreign policy or the world's corporate oil and military interests.”

Jeremy Corbyn MP, Islington North
