Launch of new socialist group within the Labour Party
‘Founding Conference’ of the Labour Representation Committee
Saturday 3rd July 2004 10am - 4.30pm TUC Congress House Great Russell St London WC1
On Saturday a conference convened by the left of the Labour Party, including the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, is launching a new challenge to New Labour and Tony Blair.
The conference of rank and file members of the Labour Party and trade unions will launch the Labour Representation Committee (LRC). The aim of the LRC is to give a voice organisational base within the Labour Party to challenge New Labour with the development of a programme of socialist policies.
The LRC aims to set up socialist groups at every level of the party to confront New Labour. It is a reflection of the growing anger with the Blair/New Labour leadership for its support for the war on Iraq and its domestic policy programme based upon privatisation and job cuts. The LRC will be a grassroots organisation that will run alongside the challenge by the ‘Big 4’ unions to take on New Labour.
