The decision of the NEC to close nominations for the leadership in nine days time, after opening them just four days previously, is nothing less than a stitch up. It means the door has been firmly closed on a number of potential candidates, probably including LRC endorsed John McDonnell. A lengthy election is pointless if it has been compromised by an unacceptable selection process.
Jon Cruddas MP has already called upon the NEC to reconvene and extend the deadline. In the interests of democratic debate we should encourage other MPs, and party activists, to join Cruddas in his appeal to the NEC. This is crucial if we are to have the proper discussion on the future of the party that has been promised.
In the meantime we should of course do all we can to try to get John McDonnell on the ballot paper within the existing timeframe.
