Organising for Equality - a report of the Left Women's Network fringe meeting at LRC Conference 2007
The Left Women's Network Fringe Meeting, chaired by Marsha-Jane Thompson, was attended by around 30 women (approximately 80% of women at the conference) and two men. We discussed the need to increase women's participation, ensuring that issues that particularly affect women are on the LRC's campaigning agenda. Some women expressed reservations at women organising separately, arguing that this might mean that women participate less in the ‘mainstream’ LRC. However, most women in the room argued that this was not the intention of the Left Women's Network. In fact it was agreed that our main aim was to increase women's participation in all areas.
Given that only 25-30% of LRC members are women, the aim of the Left Women's Network is to tackle the reasons why women are underrepresented within in the LRC membership, why they tend to contribute less in debates, and why issues that particularly affect women, like childcare and abortion rights, slip off the agenda.
Other areas raised in the discussion were regarding the LRC providing a creche for the conference next year and the accessibility of future meetings. It was decided that we will be holding a founding Left Women's Network Conference next year.
